History of the Pegaso Z-102
The Pegaso Z-102 was a Spanish sports automobile made by Pegaso in Spain between 1951 and 1958 in both coupé and cabriolet configuration. The Z-102 was the world's fastest production automobile at the time of its release, reaching a maximum speed of 151 mph. Pegaso was a well-known firm known for its trucks and motor coaches, but it also manufactured sports cars for seven years.
Z-102s competed in a number of racing events but had little to no success. Pegaso fielded three Z-102 Spyders in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, however during the race, driver Juan Jover underestimated the speed of his approach to the curve after the Dunlop bridge, leading his Z-102 Spyder to smash into the barriers at more than 120 mph. As a result of the incident, he suffered major injuries to his left leg, and Pegaso chose to withdraw their other vehicles. They also raced in the 1954 Carrera Panamericana, piloted by Joaquin Palacio, and had good performances in the initial stages before an accident stopped them from finishing in first place.
