History of the Cadillac DeVille
The Cadillac Deville nameplate was first used as a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and would be so until 1959 when it became a standalone model in the Cadillac Range.
In late 1949 the Series 62 Coupe DeVille was introduced, it was one of the first pillarless hardtop coupes, one of three that general motors had produced at the time, the others being the Buick Roadmaster Riviera and the Oldsmobile 98. The Series 62 gained popularity over the next few years, with the DeVille being the favoured trim level of the line, accounting for just under half of all Series 62 sales in 1956, which was a record sales year for the Series 62.
In 1959, Cadillac debuted the first standalone DeVilles. These are iconic vehicles, remembered for their huge tailfins and the taillights that extended from the rear in a bullet-like shape. The 1960s DeVilles had a few distinct changes, such as the full-width grille and less chrome on the trim and lower tailfins than the '59 models. The new standalone DeVilles all came powered with a 6.4L V8 engine.
