History of the Lotus 7
Between 1957 and 1972, Lotus Cars developed the Lotus Seven, a compact, basic, lightweight two-seater open-top sports automobile. Lotus founder Colin Chapman developed it, and it is regarded as the essence of the Lotus concept of performance through lightweight and simplicity. Due to its appeal as a road-legal automobile that could be used for clubman racing, the first model was a huge success, selling over 2,500 units.
The Lotus Seven replaced the Mark VI as the 'entry-level' Lotus automobile in 1957. The name 'Seven' was drawn from a vehicle that Lotus abandoned, a Riley-powered single-seater that Lotus planned to compete into Formula Two in 1952 or 1953. However, its sponsors built a sports vehicle on Chapman's chassis and dubbed it the Clairmonte Special. The Lotus Seven was powered by a 40 horsepower Ford Side-valve 1,172 cc inline-four engine, comparable to Chapman's previous Lotus Mark VI, but with a distinctive tubular frame reminiscent of the Lotus Eleven. It was used for road racing as well as club racing.
