History of the Auto-Union 1000
1965 Auto Union 1000
The Auto-Union 1000 was manufactured by Auto-Union from 1958 until 1965 and was the first Auto-Union badged car to be produced since the 1930s. It replaced the DKW 3=6 and was quite similar in design to the 1000, however, the 1000 had a larger engine of 981cc. The Auto-Union Dusseldorf plant produced around 171,008 Auto Union 1000s during the six-year model run with 1000 SP sports versions remaining in production for an additional two years until 1965 producing 6,640 total SPs. The car performed well in Germany, however, the import tariffs to the UK hit sales in the market, as the larger Austin A99 Westminster was £111 cheaper and also a much larger design.
